Pathfinder Reviews & Design Work

For five or six years, the only RPG I played any more was Exalted. Oh, I still had all my old 3.5e D&D books, but I had no desire to use them any more. 4e came out, but it did nothing to excite me. Then something happened that brought me back to the original RPG: my 8 year old son wanted to start gaming. There was no way we were going to start him off with Exalted. It's not a beginner's game by any stretch of the imagination.

I still didn't feel like playing 3.5, but another option had arrived on the scene: Pathfinder. I bought the book hoping it would be at least a good read. It was more than just a good read; it reinspired me to play something other than Exalted again. The more I read it, the more excited I got. It was clearly in the same vein as the previous incarnations of D&D, but it had tweaks and changes that improved gameplay and made it easier to make exactly the sort of character you wanted to play. Or, more importantly for me, that my 8 year old wanted to play.

I have tweaked, modded, and redesigned D&D since I first started playing it. I've even managed to get paid for it. Pathfinder has given me the urge to do it again. I'm not jumping straight in to releasing products, however. I'm going to start by posting reviews of Pathfinder products, both from Paizo and from third party publishers. The third party publishers are my inspiration to do this again. I thought 3.0 and 3.5 had some amazing products. Today's designers have really stepped up their game!

I'm currently researching several topics, ranging from armor to natural philosophy. I'm going to channel my geekiness and my rekindled interest in rolling dice other than d10s into creating interesting Pathfinder supplements. :) I will post small items that won't fit in a product and samples as I get closer to releasing PDFs under the Random Ravens imprint. Hopefully I can spread my excitement for Pathfinder and get even more former D&D players back into the game!
